Behind the Gains (with Mylynh Nguyen)

Hey guys, welcome back to the blog! I’m going to be beginning a new series where I do an interview with various people from different fitness backgrounds to try and see what makes them tick and what impact exercise has had on their lives. My first guest for this series will be my friend Mylynh! Enjoy!

So let’s start at the beginning, what made you first start implementing exercise into your life?

M: I was pretty active at a young age. My favourite class during elementary and high school was gym class. It would have to be around prom when I started incorporating physical activity into my routine.

Was it tough to stay consistent at first?

M: It was! Simply because I had no idea what I was doing. I was just searching up random YouTube videos and doing whatever workout video showed up.

Most people usually workout for the physical benefits but some also find it helps them mentally as well. Which do you find is more important to you?

M: If you asked me 5 years ago, my response would have been the physical appeal. Then during university, I started working out for my health concerns. But now, it's more mental because exercise is now a natural part of my routine. It’s one of the few things in life where I have 100% focus and forget about everything that is going on around me.

When it comes to your workouts, do you prefer having a partner with you or just training alone? Why do you think you prefer it?

M: It’s definitely more motivating to work out with my friends or with my sister. When I do workout alone, I end up doing the same routine. But when I am with my friends, I learn different exercises and target different muscle groups. It’s also helpful to have someone push you to achieve higher reps.

Now that training is becoming more consistent for you, do you have any specific goals you’d like to see yourself achieve in the gym?

M: Right now, I am more focused on keeping a consistent schedule. But I do feel stagnant. I think that’s why it’s important to have a personal trainer or a community to help motivate you.

If you could give any advice to somebody in your similar position to when you first started working out, what would it be?

M: Keep trying new things and keep searching for new programs/personal trainers until you find someone you like. I am learning new tips all the time even for workout moves that I have practiced for years. In the beginning, it can be intimidating but if you keep going, you will slowly build your confidence.
